What is EPDM Roofing?
EPDM (ethylene propylene diene terpolymer) is a rubber based roofing membrane, and one of the most versatile rubber roofing options on the market. EPDM is easily and quickly installed, as it can simply be rolled out into place, cut to the correct size, and then fixed in place with adhesives or fasteners. EPDM is considered one of the best options for rubber flat roofs.
If you’ve had a flat roof previously installed, that used a different roofing material, you could be fed up with hard-to-spot leaks that have led to expensive repairs.
Rubber roofing has an extremely high durability in comparison to traditional flat roofing materials, which can quickly become worn and begin to degrade. Rubber roofing features an impressive resistance to wear from UV radiation and ozone damage, and EPDM is also not affected by temperature fluctuations. Additionally, EPDM roofs are highly fire resistant.
Properly installed EPDM roofing can carry a life expectancy of up to 50 years, under optimal conditions, and with regular checks and required repairs carried out.
EPDM roofing is composed of recycled materials, as it’s mainly made up of recycled tires and sawdust, so it’s actually far more environmentally friendly than traditional roofing materials! EPDM is also BBA certified, a signifier that it’s a quality product, and because of its natural properties, EPDM roofs are completely resistant to blistering, cracks and rot.
Ease of maintenance
EPDM is resistant to the growth of moss, and does not easily show dirt, so you’ll spend less time cleaning an EPDM roof, than a traditional roof. Additionally, EPDM roofs are designed to take light foot traffic for occasional cleaning or maintenance, so any maintenance you do need to carry out can be done easily.
