What Happens To Asbestos

asbestos removal

From the 1940s right up until 1999, asbestos was widely used in a number of industries across not only the UK but also the world. Introduced as an incredible material to be included in many builds, it wasn’t until decades later that we started to take notice of the effects it was having on the health of people and the environment.

Removal Of Asbestos

Following the ban of using asbestos in builds, many people or businesses decided to have their asbestos removed where they could. However, further research found that providing the asbestos was not disturbed, it caused no harm.
Current regulations state that asbestos can remain in situ, providing it will not be in danger of being disturbed or damaged in any way.
If you will be undertaking work that may damage the asbestos, it will need to be removed as soon as possible and before any damage can be done. Our team of experts will ensure that the asbestos is removed with minimal damage to it, ensuring that the risk in your home or building is minimal. It will then be removed in appropriate packaging and taken to a dedicated site.

Asbestos At Landfill

At present, asbestos is required to be removed by trained professionals and disposed of by them. This will ensure that the asbestos ends up in one of the UK’s dedicated asbestos sites. Unfortunately, until modern technologies and policies are advanced, the final destination for asbestos is to be buried at these designated landfills. It is then the responsibility of the site owners to ensure that there are no leaks or emissions from the asbestos over time. In time, this process will change.

The Future

There are a number of organisations across the EU that are conducting research into more climate and eco-friendly methods of asbestos waste disposal. This currently includes an EU-funded project that includes a reactor that destroys asbestos, while boasting no negative impact on the environment or human health.
There may be some time before these methods are widely used across the world, however, every step made is in the right direction.
