The Dangers of Asbestos

Asbestos has been banned in the UK for over two decades now, however, the risk from this once lauded building material is still very present.

What’s the danger?

Because asbestos was once considered such an effective building material, due to its insulating properties, any property built or refurbished prior to the millennium is extremely likely to contain asbestos in some form.

So, why does this matter? According to HSE, around 5000 people in the UK die each year as a result of asbestos exposure, as when asbestos is disturbed the fibres released into the air can be extremely damaging to the human body.

When asbestos fibres are inhaled, they can cause a number of diseases and serious lung issues, often the symptoms of such illnesses won’t appear immediately, and will take many years to develop, making treatment extremely difficult.

Illnesses that can be caused by asbestos exposure include, Mesothelioma; an extremely lethal cancer of the lungs and digestive tract, Asbestosis; scarring of the lungs, Pleural Thickening; a thickening of the lining of the lungs, as well as other forms of lung cancer.

Protect yourself and others

Prevention is key in the fight against asbestos related illness. If you suspect that asbestos might be present during any renovation or refurbishment work, it’s important that you deal with it swiftly and appropriately. Once the presence of asbestos has been confirmed, the affected materials need to either be left undisturbed and sealed, or be removed and disposed of professionally
