You never want to find water leaking from your ceiling, but it is important to take immediate action to avoid more damage to your property.
Here at East Midlands Roofing Solutions, we have years of experience in dealing with roof repairs across Nottingham. For our latest blog, we are going to share advice about how to spot leaks, containing them and how we will fix them.
How to Contain a Leak
If you discover water dripping from a bulge or discolouration in your ceiling, it is highly likely that water is pooling on the other side. Firstly, grab a bucket and a rubbish bin or some other container and put it under the site of the suspected leak. You could even consider propping up a board inside the container so that the drips hit the board and not the build-up of water which minimises the repetitive dripping noise.
Now take an old screwdriver, locate the centre of the bulge where the water is built up and puncture it right in the middle. While this may seem strange, punching a new hole in your roof will allow water to drain smoothly and relieve the pressure on the rest of your ceiling. If water starts to accumulate and pools, this could collapse your entire ceiling.
If you know the location of your leak and can safely get to the source, cover the exterior surface with a large tarp. If you would rather leave it to the professionals, get in touch with East Midlands Roofing Solutions to take it from here.
If your leak is due to adverse weather, we will not be able to repair it until the weather has stopped. The tarping service acts as a temporary fix which will minimise the damage inside your home until we can fix the problem.
Our experienced roofers will inspect both exterior of your roof plus the inside of your home, usually through the attic. An inspection of the underside of the roof sheeting could show signs of water damage.
Don’t Delay For Roof Repairs
It is important to respond fast to roof leaks as they will never get better by just being left alone. Even if your leak does not look that severe, it will need fixing immediately. We often hear homeowners say they notice a stain on their ceiling or possibly some bubbling for a long time but didn’t think it was serious.
Avoiding and ignoring it will not fix your leak and there have been instances where damage has been noticed in homes when it is already too late. We would recommend inspecting your roof twice a year, during the autumn and spring.
Here is a breakdown of fixable issues to look out for –
- On the inside keep an eye out for dark spots, spots where outside light shines through and sagging.
- On the outside lookout for missing, warped, rotting, peeling, broken, blistering or buckling shingles. Also, keep an eye out for clogged or slow-draining gutters plus loose material or wear around chimneys or vents.
If your roof is less than 15 years old, it could be spot-repaired instead of replacing the entire roof.
Roof leaks are usually a sign of a larger problem, with an increased danger of structural erosion if unaddressed. Having regular inspections is the best way to combat a leaky roof.
